| The school system is governed by a five-member School Board appointed by Salem City Council. Members serve overlapping three-year terms. The Superintendent is the Board's chief executive officer and is appointed for a four-year term. |
| Functions

Primary functions of the School Board include overseeing the administration of the school system, setting policies for guiding the administration of the schools, and developing an annual school budget. |
| Meetings |
| School Board Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month beginning at 7:00 pm. Meetings are held in the Board Room of the School Administration Building at 510 South College Avenue in Salem.The meetings are open to the public and all interested citizens. |
