Accelerated Reader

Search our quiz list

The Accelerated Program is a popular reading incentive program designed for elementary and middle schools.  Each classroom has a list of books for which South Salem has computerized tests.  These lists are also housed at local public libraries and bookstores.  Students in grades 2 - 5 can take tests on their classroom computers or in the computer lab during regular school hours.  Kindergartners and first graders may also take tests with their teacher's approval.

Books are coded by reading level, and students are encouraged to select books within their instructional reading levels.  Each test is worth points which are dependant upon the difficulty and the length of the book.  Students must respond correctly to 60% of the questions in order to receive any points for the test.  Individual, classroom, and school-wide recognition is given each year for students who earn 25 or more ARP points during the school year.  The PTA sponsors an special event at mid-year for students with at least 50 points.  Students who earn at least 100 points during the school year are treated to a celebration near the end of May.
