Report Cards and Promotion Policy

Report cards are used to evaluate students in Grades K-5. Grades 1-5 are evaluated six times a year at six-week intervals. Kindergarten evaluates in the fall (during the first parent/teacher conference), at the end of first semester, in the spring (at the end of the fifth six weeks), and at the end of the year.

Grades 1 and 2 use an E (excellent), S (satisfactory), and N (needs improvement) grade reporting. Kindergarten uses only B (for beginning to learn: emerging skill), S, and N. Grades 3 through 5 use A, B, C, D and F. Music, art, and physical education are evaluated with E, S and N in grades four and five. Handwriting is evaluated with E, S and N in grades 1 - 5.

South Salem School follows the Salem City Schools’ Policy IKFC Promotion. Generally, students are expected to master the four core academic areas: reading/language arts (including spelling, grammar, composition, and handwriting), mathematical concepts and computation, science, and social science. Students must demonstrate a proficient level of knowledge and skills in three of these four academic areas in order to be promoted. One of the three proficient core academic areas must be language arts.

In addition, students in Grades 3-5 must pass the English and mathematics SOL tests in order to be promoted. Successful completion of an approved remedial program may be the basis for promotion to the next grade level.

Any parent wishing to receive a complete copy of the Salem City Schools’ Policy on promotion may request one from the principal or access the Policy Manual online.
