Attendance Policies
Early Arrivals and Departures
Children are not arrive before 7:30 A.M. and are to be picked up by 2:30 P.M. on regular school days unless prior, special approval from the principal has been obtained.
Absences
South Salem School is an exceptional school, but children must be present to benefit from all that our school has to offer. It is very important that your child attends school every day. If your child must be absent, please do two things faithfully:
- Call the office as soon as possible on the morning of the absence.
- Send a signed note or excuse on the day of your child’s return, stating the reason for the absence for the attendance record.
Excused absences include illness, doctor or dentist appointments, and illness or death of a family member. Absences from school for other reasons should be discussed with the teacher and principal in advance. In addition, retention will be considered for students with 20 or more days absent in a school year.
Leaving School
If your child becomes ill during the school day, he or she will remain in the nurse/office area until being picked up from school. No child will be allowed to leave school unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Appointments
Parents should send a note in advance if a child has an appointment before school dismissal (2:25 p.m.). Children must be picked up prior to 2:00 p.m. or wait until walkers and car riders are dismissed at 2:30 p.m.
Tardiness
Students need to be on time for school. Tardiness is both disruptive to the student and the teacher. Students reporting to class after 8:05 a.m. will be counted tardy. Parents must sign their tardy child into the office or they may be counted absent.
Make-up Work
Students with excused absences will be allowed to make up missed class-work. A request for assignments should be made prior to 9:00 a.m. by calling the office. The assignments will be ready in the office by the end of the school day. Teachers will not be responsible for make up work for students who are repeatedly tardy or absent.
Truancy
Truancy is a violation of the compulsory school attendance law. Truant students are those who display a pattern of excessive absence, for all or a part (tardies) of the school day for other than legitimate reasons.
