Breakfast Program
South Salem Elementary School serves breakfast for all interested students. The full price is $1.00. Children who get a free or reduced lunch may also have a free or reduced breakfast at 30 cents. An adult breakfast is $1.45. Serving begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 8:10 a.m. In the event of a delayed opening, breakfast will NOT be served.
Lunch Program
Our cafeteria serves nourishing, well-balanced lunches. We invite and encourage our students to eat lunch prepared in our cafeteria. A menu is issued to each child monthly. If a student prefers to bring his lunch from home, he is welcome to do so. We discourage the packing of soft drinks in lunches and bringing fast food into our cafeteria.
Prices
- Student breakfast $ 1.00
- Adult breakfast $1.45
- Student lunch including milk $1.70
- Reduced lunch including milk .40
- Adult lunch $2.35

Free and Reduced Lunch Applications are sent home with all children at the start of each school year. Additional applications are available in the main office.
Prepaid Meals
Information regarding the prepay (debit) system (available for lunch and breakfast) is provided to all parents at the start of each year. In addition to increased convenience and privacy for families, the system dramatically speeds up the serving line. If you choose to not use the debit system, please provide your child with exact change because it speeds up the serving line and gives your child more time to eat.
Ice Cream
Ice cream is available daily at the price of 50 cents. The order is taken in the classroom and money is sent to the office every morning. Ice cream cannot be charged.
Ice cream will be sold during homeroom time only, therefore, children reporting after the tardy bell at 8:05 will not be able to purchase ice cream that day. This is not a punishment for being tardy, but is necessary because of the clerical time required of the teacher. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Borrowing Money
Please keep your student’s cafeteria account current. The cafeteria program receives some federal funding and is subject to strict accounting guidelines. Students who “charge” (borrow) money from the office for breakfast or lunch must pay that money back to the office and not the cafeteria. In an effort to standardize procedures, the four Salem elementary schools only permit students to charge a total of $5.00 for school lunch/breakfast. Once the $5.00 maximum is reached, the student will be provided toast and a carton of milk for breakfast and/or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a carton of milk for lunch.
Lunch Visits
If you plan to have lunch with your child, please call the office that morning or send a note by your child. The cafeteria staff needs to have a record of the number planning to eat. Please wait in the lobby (outside the cafeteria) until your child's class arrives.
Lunchroom Conduct
South Salem rules are made to provide a safe and relaxing atmosphere for students to enjoy their lunch break. All students will follow these rules. Cafeteria conduct is a component of the Report Card evaluation.
- Walk in the cafeteria at all times.
- Talk quietly -- inappropriate noise and loud talking is prohibited. Students are expected to eat without talking during the first 10 minutes of lunch.
- Stay in your seat.
- Raise your hand for assistance.
- Do not leave the lunchroom without the permission of the lunchroom supervisor.
- Be responsible for collecting your trash and leaving your eating area clean.
- Do not throw or play with food.
- Show respect for the lunchroom supervisor and aide, both of whom are on duty to enforce these rules and to assist the students.
