The Liberty Bell

The Liberty Bell has been a symbol of patriotism for over 200 years. It was first rung in 1776 to announce the signing of the Declaration of Independence, announcing America's freedom. It was cracked the first time it was rung but was recast and rung many times afterwards. In fact, it was rung every year on July 4 until 1835 when it cracked again. The Liberty Bell has also been called The Old State House Bell, The Bell of the Revolution, and Old Independence.

In England, town bells were used to send messages to people. The Liberty Bell was made in England in 1752 and weighs more than 2,000 pounds. Today it is a popular tourist attraction in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is only rung on special occasions.
