SOL 10.1a The student will use maps, globes, photographs, and pictures to analyze the physical and human landscapes of the world in order to recognize the different map projections and explain the concept of distortion

The only true representation of the earth is a globe.

All maps distort the shape of the earth's features because the round earth cannot accurately be shown on a flat surface.

SOL 10.1b The student will use maps, globes, photographs, and pictures to analyze the physical and human landscapes of the world in order to
show how maps reflect particular historical and political prospectives
Maps reflect different points of view

     Maps change over time
         Make sure you know:
                  Map of Columbus' time
                  Maps of China, Japan, Taiwan
Make sure you understand the changes in the maps of the countries listed in the chart below.

Countries

Changes

Countries of Africa

Changes between 1914 and 1990's (page 441 in textbook)

Countries of Europe

before World War I, after World War I and since 1990

Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States

Changes since the fall of Communism

Middle East and North Africa

Before 1948  and since 1978 (this deals with the wars between the Palestinians and the Jews over Israel)

Asia, Hong Kong, Korea,
Vietnam, Japan

Be able to recognize these places on a map and know how they have changed during the 1900's.

Do you understand the difference between? Taiwan, Formosa, and the Republic of China.  These are all the same name for the island nation off the coast of the Peoples Republic of China.  This is sometimes called Nationalist China.  Taiwan is a democracy but is considered part of the People's Republic of China which is a communist government.

Do you understand the difference between? Israel, Palestine, and the Occupied territories.  Israel is the independent country in the Middle East.  The Palestinians want to regain control of the Occupied territories in Israel.  The Occupied territories are the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights.  The Palestinians are part of the PLO or Palestinian Liberation Organization which is led by Arafat.

SOL 10.1c The student will use maps, globes, photographs, and pictures to analyze the physical and human landscapes of the world in order to apply the concepts of scale, orientation, latitude and longitude.

The scale of miles is used to measure distance on a map.

The amount of detail on a map is dependent on the scale used.

Latitude and longitude determine absolute location

Lines of latituderun east and west, but are measured north and south

0 degrees latitude is the Equator

23 1/2 degrees north latitude is the Tropic of Cancer

23 1/2 degrees south latitude is the Tropic of Capricorn

90 degrees north latitude is the North Pole

90 degrees south latitude is the South Pole

Lines of longitude run north and south, but are measured east and west

0 degrees longitude is the Prime Meridian

180 degrees longitude is the International Date Line- this is the line on the globe were dates change.

Latitude and longitude addresses are used to locate places on a grid or a globe.  This is especially helpful for airline pilots and sea captains.  Every place on the globe has a latitude and longitude address including every home.

compass rose is used to show directions on a map.  Every map should include a compass rose.

legend or key explains what the symbols mean on a map.
