Welcome to First Grade!!

Vocabulary- eat, from, gone, grows, or, two

Sight Words- now, will, has, good, be

** Sight words will be reviewed each week in student's word boxes.

**Vocabulary words will be reviewed each week in student's writing journals.

 Math:

We are assessing addition problems with a sum of 10 and subtraction problems with the difference of 10 during this grading period.  Please practice flashcards at home with your child to develop automaticity with their facts.  You may also review any of the following skills at home with your child- counting by 2's. 5's, or 10's, counting/writing numbers to 100, counting backwards from 20, telling time to the hour & half hour, extending patterns using two or three colors or items, or writing numbers before or after a number.

Social Science:

We are presently studying our Economics Unit-SOL 1.7- Goods/Services, SOL 1.8- Wants/Needs, and SOL 1.9- Saving Money.  We will be reading books and doing activities that help us understand the difference between a good/service and how we are both consumers/producers. We will also learn how to make choices between what we may want and what we really need.  We will also learn to recognize that money needs to be saved for future purchases of goods or services.

Word Study:

The students in first grade are given a Developmental Spelling Assessment at the beginning of the school year.  First grade teachers continue to assess students several other times during the school year to make sure we are focused on each student's individual needs.  First graders will spend the first six weeks of school reviewing their short vowels sounds in various word patterns in their homeroom class.  At the beginning of the 2nd 6-week period, students will be grouped with other students that are working on the same spelling features and students will switch to other First grade classrooms once a day for 30 minutes of Word Work.  This allows students to work at their developmental spelling stage by being challenged without feeling frustrated.
