WEST SALEM ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL
I am very excited to welcome you to second grade at
West Salem Elementary! In this letter you will find information
about our curriculum that will be helpful to you.

Back to School
Night
Tuesday, September
22, 2009 @ 6:00 p.m.
SNACK BREAK
There will be a break provided each morning for a
healthy snackand a brief recess. Please provide your child with a
nutritional snack such as vegetables, fruit, cheese, yogurt,
crackers or nuts.
SCHOOL HOURS
8:05 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. Tardiness is counted after
8:05.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
We will implement a behavior
management program integrated with CHARACTER COUNTS. Details of
this are on colored paper also coming home on the first day of
school. Both sheets need to be signed and returned to school
by Friday, Sept. 11, 2009.
DAILY ASSIGNMENT BOOK
This assignment
book is used as a very important tool for correspondence between
home and school.
Your child will be
writing his/her assignments in this book daily and bringing it home.
Also, “strikes” will be noted as well as any other correspondence
needed. Please check and initial it Monday through Friday. There
will usually be no homework on Friday but behavior will be
indicated, if needed.
Moment of Silence
The state of Virginia has
mandated a moment of silence at the beginning of each school day.
You may wish to discuss with your child what they might reflect upon
during this time.
WHITE WEST SALEM
FOLDERS
Your child will be bringing
this folder home every day. The folder has two pockets. One pocket
is labeled “SCHOOL NEWS” / “HOMEWORK” and the other is labeled
“CHECKED PAPERS”. I will be sending papers home daily in the
appropriate pockets as soon as they are checked/graded. By checking
this folder each day, you will monitor the progress of your student
and stay current with school happenings. PLEASE TAKE PAPERS OUT
EACH DAY UNLESS ASKED TO RETURN THEM. Thank you so much for your
help with this.
NOTEBOOKS
One 5 subject notebook will be
coming home each night.
It will contain spelling
words, vocabulary for reading, math, social studies and science
notes pertinent to units of study.
Also very important,
please notify me with a note or phone call to the office if there is
a change in transportation for your child.
