Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading incentive program in which students are asked literal questions that measure their comprehension of a book. West Salem presently owns quizzes for over 7,000 books. Books are coded by reading level, and students are encouraged to select books within their instructional reading levels. Each test is worth points which are dependant upon the difficulty and the length of the book. Students must respond correctly to 60% of the questions in order to receive any points for the test. At the end of the year, medals will be awarded as follows:
