Student Conduct and Discipline
Good discipline in the classroom and throughout the school is essential if effective teaching and learning is to take place. Students are expected to respect the authority of the school staff and the rights and feelings of each other.
This school will continually strive to guide the physical, mental, social, and emotional development of its students. The cooperation of the home is an absolute necessity if we are to accomplish our goal. A child must have consistent patterns of desirable behavior and opportunities to practice them if he is to be prepared for a good life.
A few areas where we can work together to develop behavior standards are:
RESPECT – For adults and all other property (their own and others)
POLITENESS – Courteous at all times; pay compliments and say kind things about others
RESPONSIBILITY – Assume responsibility for following through on objectives and plans as set up by pupils and teachers
THOUGHTFULNESS – Think about and share with others. Take turns.
General Rules:
Students will:
- Use good manners at all times.
- Obey all staff members.
- Keep their hands to themselves.
- Take care of personal belongings and school property.
- Help keep their classroom and school clean.
- Leave all dangerous objects at home.
- Bring toys or animals to school only when asked by a teacher.
- Go quietly and promptly from one place to another.
- Take turns at the drinking fountain and in other areas.
- Keep the halls clean and take care of the art work.
- Treat each other as friends.
- Follow the rules for using playground equipment.
- Use the bathroom properly.
- Sit and eat properly until excused.
- Not wear hats in the school building.
Discipline measures for minor problems may include extra reports, detention, loss of privileges or other appropriate action. Parents will be notified if the principal believes there are necessary reasons to do so. More serious offenses or repeated problems could result in short-term or long-term suspension, or expulsion. In-school suspension would also be a possible consequence for inappropriate behavior. All disciplinary alternatives shall be applied with the appropriate level of due-process protection. The City of Salem Student Conduct Code is described more fully in the School Board Policy Manual (Policy 7-32.2); - parents also receive a copy of this Student Conduct Code.
PLEASE NOTE: The school division publishes a student conduct code that is given to each student on an annual basis. In event this booklet is lost or misplaced, extra copies are available in the school office and school division administration office. The information in this handbook with regard to student conduct is a small selection of the regulations of the Student Conduct Code Book and is included here for extra emphasis.
