West Salem's First Grade consists of 4 classes of approximately 17 students each. Students are taught in a self-contained classes.

Students have resource areas daily which include 30 minutes of music once a week, 30 minutes of art every other week, 30 minutes of gym twice weekly, library visits weekly, computer lab at least once a week, and classroom p.e. when gym is not available. They also have guidance lessons based on the pillars of Character Counts each six weeks. The DARE officer visits first grade classrooms for a 6 week period in the spring.

The first grade program strives for

• an inviting atmosphere which is conducive to learning.
• an enriched environment where learning becomes easy and available at all times for the students.
• a program where each child progresses to their maximum potential in social, mental, physical, and emotional pursuits.
• a curriculum which is guided by the Standards of Learning but exceeds these standards when appropriate.
• a variety of teaching methods to meet each child's learning style.
• basic skills and exposure to quality literature and a love of reading.
• the desire to become life-long learners.
