West Salem's Second Grade consists of 4 classes of approximately 20 students each. Students are taught in self-contained classrooms. The subject areas include Reading, Spelling, English, Handwriting, Science, Social Studies and Math.

Students have special area classes daily which include 30 minutes of music once a week, 30 minutes of art once a week, 30 minutes of gym three times weekly, 45 minutes in library weekly, computer lab once a week, and classroom p.e. when gym is not available. They also have guidance lessons based on the pillars of Character Counts each six weeks. The DARE officer teaches four 30 minute lessons during the year.

Goals for second grade include:

  • To demonstrate and reinforce good organization skills and beginning study skills.
  • To encourage reading for pleasure; to teach to read with fluency, expression and comprehension; to use word attack skills to decode unknown words.
  • To express ideas effectively in writing; to incorporate the City of Salem writing curriculum.
  • To introduce and reinforce basic math concepts; to maintain problem solving strategies.
  • To use beginning exploration skills in science.
  • To increase awareness of their world beginning with their own community and expanding their knowledge base to our country and beyond.
  • To demonstrate and promote good health habits and general wellness; to promote appropriate lifelong social skills.
